Thieves have stolen 30,000 bottles of wine collectively worth about €5 million (£4.2 million) from a prestigious Italian winery, according to Italian media reports. The incident occurred at Marchesi Antinori, one of Italy's largest family-owned wineries, at its storage facility in Tuscany on Saturday while the company was preparing to ship a consignment to customers abroad.
Details of the Theft
At least seven masked men are believed to have deactivated alarms, disabled cameras, and used company forklifts to load two large trucks with the winery's prized Tignanello, Solaia, and Guado al Tasso Tuscan reds.
Renzo Cotarella, the chief executive, stated in an interview with Corriere della Sera that this was the largest theft of its kind in Italy. He remarked:
“"A theft of this scale and value has certainly never occurred in Italy."
