Christa Pike is now able to walk in the hospital, according to her lawyer, just over a week after surviving a botched execution in Tennessee. This recovery marks a significant turnaround for Pike, who was previously declared brain dead on Monday but began to regain consciousness and speak by Tuesday.
Context of the Incident
Pike's ordeal has drawn widespread attention and criticism regarding the death penalty in the US and abroad. Her lawyer, Stephen Ferrell, reported to the BBC that while she is able to walk, she remains mentally foggy. He stated:
“"What’s been described to me is that physically there’s quite a bit going on, that her arms are very injured and she’s not able to use them very much. She is up and walking for the first time today, but just around the room, not very far."
Pike, 50, was taken to the hospital unconscious but alive from the execution chamber on September 30, after receiving two doses of the barbiturate pentobarbital. Following the botched execution attempt, one of her lawyers described the process as "cruel and torturous," noting that he counted seven needles in Pike’s left arm, one of which appeared bent.
