Authorities announced on Wednesday that they arrested an 18-year-old who was planning a shooting attack at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. The FBI officials reported that the suspect, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, was taken into custody on one count of obtaining a firearm to carry out an act of terrorism.
Arrest Details
Mohamud had been under investigation for nearly two years by the FBI. He was arrested on Tuesday in a public park after he paid $600 to an undercover FBI employee posing as a member of the Islamic State for an AK-47 and 200 rounds of ammunition, according to the criminal complaint.
Communication with Informants
Messages exchanged with a confidential informant revealed that Mohamud expressed an intent to join terrorist organizations overseas. However, those plans shifted to a planned attack in Minnesota when his overseas ambitions failed. The messages date back as far as December 2024.
