A congressional candidate in Arizona, Bernadette Greene-Placentia, has come forward with a harrowing account of being attacked and raped while attempting to fix a damaged campaign sign. The incident occurred on August 14, shortly after 2 AM, in a parking lot.
The Incident
Greene-Placentia, a Democratic candidate running in a district that includes parts of Phoenix, reported that as she was walking to repair her sign, an attacker struck her on the head, causing her to lose consciousness. Upon regaining awareness, she found herself being assaulted by a man. She described another man approaching and pushing her leg, prompting her to react defensively. The attackers ultimately left her on the ground, stating, “Not even worth it.”
Aftermath and Reporting
In the days following the assault, Greene-Placentia struggled with hazy memories of the event and its aftermath. She expressed her difficulty in recalling details, stating,
“"It’s just these little tiny flashes of things that I do remember. As much as I don’t want to remember, I’ve tried very, very hard to remember more stuff. But that’s where I’m at."
