Christa Pike, a Tennessee prisoner, is awake and speaking as she receives treatment at a hospital following a botched execution attempt last Wednesday. Her attorneys reported on Tuesday that the 50-year-old survived two doses of pentobarbital during the state's attempt to execute her, a case that has drawn significant attention both nationally and internationally.
Background
Pike was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years. Her attorneys stated, "Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking and continues to receive critical medical care. Despite the severe damage she endured to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed. Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery."
They expressed gratitude towards the first responders and medical team at the hospital for treating Pike with dignity and providing exceptional care. However, they noted that she remains shackled to her bed.
