People in Gaza recount lives irrevocably altered following the 7 October 2023 attacks by Hamas and the subsequent Israeli military offensive. Many, like Ahmed Ishtaiwi, a 43-year-old driver and mechanic, now live in makeshift shelters, clinging to remnants of their past.
Life in Ruins
Ishtaiwi resides in a tent near Deir al-Balah with his two daughters. Their former home in Beit Lahiya is now uninhabitable. He reflects on his memories:
“"When I sit on those chairs, I remember sitting in the garden at home, having breakfast and drinking tea. They remind me of my life there."
The anniversary of the Hamas raid marks a grim milestone, with 1,200 people killed in southern Israel, mostly civilians, and a relentless Israeli offensive resulting in 73,000 Palestinian deaths, primarily among civilians.
Daily Struggles
Layan al-Jbour, a 15-year-old from Khan Younis, shares a cramped shelter with her family. She reminisces about her old life:
“"When I tidy the tent, I remember our home and how I used to tidy it. I remember my room and how I used to make my bed."
