A man comforts a woman at the fountain at Dizengoff Square as Israel commemorates the third anniversary of the devastating Hamas-led attack that ignited the ongoing war in Gaza. Families gathered at various memorial sites to honor the approximately 1,200 victims and 251 hostages taken during the assault.
National Mourning
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed the collective grief of the nation, stating, "The nation unites on this day in the longing for our dear ones." Amidst the memorials, protesters called for an independent inquiry into the security failures that allowed the attack to occur.
In retaliation for the attack, Israel initiated a military offensive in Gaza, resulting in over 74,200 deaths, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, which the UN considers reliable.
Memorial Events
On Wednesday morning, bereaved families and survivors gathered at a memorial for the 378 individuals killed at the Nova dance festival in southern Israel on 7 October 2023. The festival site, located near Kibbutz Re'im, was the target of a dawn attack by Hamas gunmen. Witnesses recounted harrowing experiences of violence, including shootings and abductions.
Ahuva Yavin Mayze, whose daughter Adi, aged 21, was killed at the festival, described the events as "dystopic, unimaginable."
Shlomo Sharf, a former Israeli footballer, shared his sorrow, saying, "Today is a difficult day, not only for me but for a large part of the nation," as he remembered his granddaughter, May Naim, who was also a victim.
Community Resilience
At Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where 64 residents were killed and 19 taken hostage, community leader Zion Regev noted that many survivors have yet to return home due to trauma. He remarked, "It's a very emotional day, it's a very difficult day for our community, three years after 7 October."
