A former Ukrainian security services officer, Vitalii Zhykovych, has spoken out from prison regarding a bomb attack in Monaco that occurred in June and targeted multi-millionaire Vadym Yermolayev. In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Zhykovych claims that the attack was ordered by senior members of HUR, Ukraine's military intelligence agency.
Background of the Attack
The bombing left Yermolayev and his 13-year-old son severely injured, while his partner suffered catastrophic injuries. Yermolayev described their survival as "nothing short of a miracle." Zhykovych, who identifies himself as a "freelancer" for Ukraine's SBU security service, alleges that Anastasia Berezovska, the woman filmed planting the bomb, was his "agent."
A week after the bombing, Berezovska's body was found in the woods near Kyiv, with gunshot wounds to the head. Zhykovych denies any involvement in her death, stating he did not send her to kill and was arrested alongside Vladyslav Reut, an active-duty intelligence officer from HUR, who initially confessed to the murder but later changed his testimony to implicate Zhykovych.
Allegations Against HUR
Zhykovych claims that Reut, whom he refers to as "The Boss," proposed the operation against Yermolayev, asserting it was an official mission authorized by Reut's superiors in HUR. He stated:
“"As Reut informed me, this operation […] had been authorised and approved by Reut's superiors, who served in the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence [HUR]."
