Curtis Flowers, a Black man who spent more than 22 years in prison and was on death row in Mississippi, has died at the age of 56. His family confirmed that he passed away on Wednesday at his home, as reported by attorney Rob McDuff to the Associated Press on Thursday. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Background

Flowers was arrested in 1996 for the shooting deaths of four people inside a furniture store in Winona, Mississippi. Prosecutors characterized him as a disgruntled former employee seeking revenge against the store’s owner after being fired and having most of his pay withheld to cover damaged merchandise. Following the killings, nearly $300 was reported missing.
