Elon Musk has raised concerns about the influence of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani as SpaceX faces challenges in launching its Starlink satellite internet service in India. Musk's remarks, shared on X, highlight ongoing regulatory delays after the Indian government dismissed his claims that powerful business interests were obstructing Starlink's entry into the market.
Allegations of Monopolistic Practices
On Wednesday, Musk accused unnamed "oligarchs" of hindering Starlink's launch in India to maintain their "monopolistic chokehold" on the country. He described this alleged obstruction as a "crime against the people of India", arguing that Starlink could provide affordable, high-speed internet to those lacking access.
In response, the Ministry of Communications of India asserted that its regulatory framework for satellite communications is "fair and non-discriminatory." The ministry clarified that Starlink and two other licensed satellite operators are at a similar regulatory stage, undergoing security assessments necessary for seeking spectrum, the radio frequencies used by satellites.
Musk's Direct Challenge
On Thursday, Musk escalated his comments by questioning Ambani's influence, asking, "Is Ambani the real boss of India?" He expressed frustration over Starlink's prolonged compliance with Indian regulations and the absence of a license after years of effort.
Starlink has been attempting to enter the Indian market for over five years, targeting a population with more than a billion internet subscribers. Despite securing key regulatory approvals and forming partnerships with telecom giants Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel last year, it has yet to commence commercial services.
