The Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to French scientist Henri B. Kagan and Japan's Kenso Soai for their groundbreaking work in solving the chemical mystery of life's asymmetry.
Understanding Chirality
The Nobel Committee explained that molecules used by all life, such as the amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins, are known as chiral. This means they exist in two versions that are mirror images of one another. However, the building blocks necessary for creating living organisms on Earth only function with one version.
