US Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed reporters' inquiries regarding allegations against Kimberly Guilfoyle, the US ambassador to Greece, who reportedly asked a Trump donor to cover her $100,000 American Express bill in exchange for access to the administration.
Allegations Against Guilfoyle
The claims surfaced in a Wall Street Journal report, which stated that Guilfoyle, a close ally of the Trump family, sought financial assistance from a donor prior to her Senate confirmation hearing. When questioned during his visit to Athens on Wednesday, Rubio stated:
“"You guys somehow walk around thinking that because some source told you something, and you reported it, it’s the gospel. It’s not the gospel, it’s not the gospel for me."
Rubio refrained from addressing the specifics of Guilfoyle's alleged actions, instead praising the work of the embassy in Greece and asserting that Guilfoyle has been a strong ambassador.
Calls for Investigation
Top Democrats, including Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Gregory Meeks, have urged Rubio to investigate Guilfoyle's conduct. Shaheen sent a letter requesting an immediate review of Guilfoyle's actions, emphasizing that such behavior could undermine US credibility abroad:
