Jaguar has launched its latest electric vehicle, the Type 01, in New York on Tuesday night, aiming to attract affluent young buyers in the US. Measuring over 5.2 meters in length and 2 meters in width, the Type 01 is designed for the expansive roads of America but poses challenges for parking in the UK, where it will not fit into standard spaces.
A New Direction for Jaguar
This launch marks the culmination of a two-year rebranding effort aimed at shifting Jaguar's image from its previous customer base of older men to a younger, wealthier demographic. Rawdon Glover, Jaguar’s managing director, stated that the company hopes to appeal to buyers who are “urban” and “very design literate, very technology literate.” He emphasized that the Type 01 represents a bold choice for consumers.
““The person making this purchase will be choosing the car because it’s a bold choice,” Glover said.
The Type 01 features a striking design with an ultra-long bonnet and low roof, setting it apart from its predecessor, the F-Type, which had a starting price of around £62,000. The new model starts at £130,000 (approximately $172,000), reflecting a significant price increase.
Market Challenges and Strategic Shifts
The launch comes at a pivotal time for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which has faced declining sales due to competition from cheaper Chinese brands. The company is still recovering from a cyber-attack last year that cost the economy an estimated £1.9 billion. In response to these challenges, JLR announced 4,000 job cuts to save £1.7 billion over two years.
