A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot a man in the Bronx, New York City, on Thursday during a targeted enforcement operation aimed at arresting a criminal illegal alien. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that an ICE officer "discharged his weapon" during the incident. The man is currently alive and receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Context

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the situation as "unconscionable and incredibly serious." He stated that early reports indicated agents surrounded the man and a five-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. Fortunately, the child was reported to be physically unharmed.

The BBC has reached out to the DHS for comments regarding Mayor Mamdani's remarks.

Developments

Later on Thursday evening, New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her outrage on behalf of New Yorkers after speaking with President Donald Trump about the shooting. She requested the release of any body camera footage to establish the facts surrounding the incident. As of now, Trump has not publicly commented on the shooting.
