Senior Labour Party figures have expressed skepticism about future cooperation with the Greens following the latter's recent decision to adopt a policy that treats Zionism as a form of racism. This significant shift occurred during the Greens' conference, where members voted to endorse a binding policy advocating for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel.
Labour's Response
A Labour minister stated that they could not foresee any scenario in which the two parties could collaborate effectively. Additionally, a government official suggested that Labour should formally rule out any future coalition or partnership with the Greens.
There is also growing pressure within the Liberal Democrats to sever existing ties with the Greens, particularly in Southwark, where some senior Lib Dem members are calling for an end to their coalition with Zack Polanski’s party.
Controversial Vote
The Greens' conference vote, which passed with 1,022 votes to 813, has sparked significant backlash. Bridget Phillipson, the Labour chair, condemned the move as "shameful," emphasizing the importance of addressing antisemitism during Jeremy Corbyn's leadership. While Phillipson's remarks were supported by her colleagues, there is ongoing debate within Labour about whether to formally distance themselves from the Greens, especially in light of potential future elections.
