A new military unit dedicated to defending satellites and supporting operations is being launched by the UK. The No III Space Effects Squadron will be announced on Wednesday by Defence Secretary Wes Streeting, who emphasized the need for Britain to "keep pace in the new space race."

Importance of Space Control

Streeting stated, "Control of the waves was the essential ingredient in 19th-century deterrence. That is why Britain built the finest naval power in history. In the 20th century it was control of the skies, and so we built a world-class air force to protect us. This century will depend on control of space."

The new Royal Air Force (RAF) squadron aims to protect satellites that provide critical services, including warning of incoming missile attacks, communications, and navigation for ships. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) highlighted that this unit will consolidate specialist personnel from across the armed forces to counter hostile activities in orbit.

Existing Capabilities

Currently, two units, the No I Space Operations Squadron and the No II Space Warning Squadron, allow the RAF to monitor and warn of threats in space. The new squadron will enhance these capabilities, utilizing advanced technology, including electronic warfare, to "disrupt, degrade and deny hostile actions."
