Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a new initiative called Project Meridian during a "State of the Force" address on Wednesday. This project aims to explore how warfare may evolve with rapid technological advancements. Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, and Palmer Luckey, founder of Anduril, will co-lead the effort alongside former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and other experts from academia and policy.

Objectives of Project Meridian

The team, directed by Defense Department CTO Emil Michael, is tasked with studying the future battlefields and the technologies that warfighters may utilize. Hegseth stated in a letter announcing the project:

“

"The goal is to study the battlefields of the future and the weapons and technologies warfighters may use on them."

The team will have 120 days to submit their findings and propose actionable solutions for developing, testing, and deploying advanced technologies to maintain America's military dominance.

Additional Developments

In conjunction with Project Meridian, Hegseth also introduced an Autonomous Warfare Command aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of autonomous systems and drones. However, the Pentagon's announcement did not specify the partner organization involved in the study or its leadership.
