The Australian Department of Defence is investigating the unexpected diversion of F-35 fighter jet parts to Hong Kong, raising concerns about potential exposure of sensitive technology secrets. The acting Prime Minister, Richard Marles, confirmed that a review will be conducted regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigation Details
Marles stated that while the review will cover everything that occurred at the Australian end, the technology parts in question were not deemed sensitive, countering earlier reports by Politico. The parts, which were being transported by an unknown third party on behalf of Lockheed Martin, have remained unaccounted for months after their diversion.
“"We are examining [Australia’s involvement], but the point I would make here is that we are confident about the way in which we’ve engaged with the program, and through the US’s prime contractor, Lockheed," Marles said on Tuesday.
Concerns Over Technology Exposure
The last known location of the components in Hong Kong, a special administrative region of China, has sparked fears that some of the program’s technological secrets could have been compromised. Sources reported that the shipment included one of the jet’s canopies, which is believed to contain stealth technology.
