A driver whose car crashed into a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters, injuring children as young as five, will remain in custody as the community rallies to support the victims. Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, an 18-year-old P-plater, faces dangerous driving charges following the incident that occurred on Saturday morning near a major roundabout.

Ten people were injured when Samarasinghe's car allegedly veered into the crowd of fans who had gathered to farewell their team. According to Tracey McCosker, chief executive of the Hunter New England Local Health District, six individuals remain hospitalized, with two in serious condition and four stable. Among the injured is a five-year-old girl who was placed in an induced coma due to critical injuries, though her condition has since stabilized.
Legal Proceedings
Samarasinghe was taken to the hospital for mandatory testing and has been charged with nine offences, including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and negligent driving. During a brief court appearance on Sunday, he did not apply for bail and was formally refused release. The judge also endorsed a warrant for a health assessment. The most serious charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison. He is scheduled to appear again at the Newcastle local court on 15 October.
