Polish campaigners have introduced a new initiative called the "AbortOmat" in Warsaw, aimed at providing women with swift and anonymous access to abortion pills, circumventing the country's near-total ban on abortion. This innovative parcel locker, described as the "world’s first parcel locker for abortion pills," features 22 compartments and allows users to retrieve the medication using a six-digit code.
Purpose of the AbortOmat
The service is designed for women who cannot wait for mail delivery due to urgent health issues or missed miscarriages, or who are concerned about receiving the pills at home. Kinga Jelinska, director of the Women Help Women foundation and co-founder of the Abortion Dream Team, emphasized the urgency of the service, stating:
“"You can order underwear, cosmetics, mascara, whatever and receive it practically the same or next day. Why not abortion pills, where in some cases there might be more urgency?"
Context of Abortion Laws in Poland
This initiative comes six years after widespread protests erupted across Poland against the tightening of already strict abortion laws, marking the largest demonstrations since the fall of communism. In 2023, these protests contributed to the election of Donald Tusk, who promised to overhaul abortion laws within 100 days. However, political stagnation has since ensued, with Tusk acknowledging a lack of majority support for changing laws to allow abortions until the 12th week of pregnancy.
