The United Arab Emirates has reportedly warned the UK government that it could cancel significant investments following the guilty verdict against Manchester City by an independent commission. Emirati officials stated that "the Premier League’s actions" would "have an influence on the bilateral state relationship," as reported by Bloomberg.
Investment Concerns
In addition to the potential cancellation of investments, the Telegraph reported that the UAE is threatening to withdraw a multi-billion pound investment into a Silicon Valley-style tech hub modeled after Oxbridge. This comes after the Premier League brought 115 charges against Manchester City for breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018, with 114 charges upheld by the independent commission in September. The commission described City’s activities as a "sham" multiple times, stating that the witnesses used during the hearing were "dishonest."
Political Reactions
The situation has drawn political attention, with Khaldoon Al Mubarak, the chair of Manchester City, meeting Jonathan Reynolds, the business secretary, in Downing Street two weeks prior to the Premier League's announcement. On Thursday, Downing Street acknowledged the seriousness of the guilty verdict against City, following accusations against Andy Burnham for making a "frankly extraordinary" intervention in support of the football club’s owners.
