The family of Ethan Scott Brown, a 23-year-old student, has stated that the University of Glasgow will be held accountable following his tragic death. Ethan took his own life on 13 December 2024, the day he was supposed to graduate, after being wrongly informed that he would not be eligible for graduation due to a missing grade.

Background

Ethan was studying geography and was set to graduate in December 2024. However, in September 2024, the university informed him that he had not received a grade for one of his courses, which meant he could not graduate with an honours degree. His family believes this misinformation contributed to his decision to end his life.

Family's Response

Ethan's mother, Tracy Scott, discovered him deceased in his bedroom on the morning of his graduation. She later collected his degree posthumously and has called for a fatal accident inquiry into his death.

In a recent development, the family settled a civil court action with the university, although the settlement amount has not been disclosed. Following this, they met with Scottish Education Secretary Màiri McAllan at St Andrew’s House in Edinburgh.
