The Republic of Ireland football team will wear black armbands during their Nations League match against Israel in Hungary on Sunday to honor all lives lost in the ongoing Gaza conflict. This decision comes after a player withdrew from the squad in protest, as confirmed by Football Association of Ireland (FAI) chief executive David Courell.
Player Withdrawal and Team Decision
Courell stated that despite the withdrawal, a vote among the squad showed a "significant majority" in favor of proceeding with the match. He mentioned that the players plan to make further gestures during both the away game in Debrecen and the return fixture in Serbia next Sunday.
The fixtures have sparked controversy since the teams were drawn to play each other in Group B3, with calls for the Republic of Ireland to withdraw due to the ongoing conflict. A campaign titled "Stop The Game," organized by the pressure group Irish Sport for Palestine, has gained traction.
“"One of their requests is to remove their media obligations for the remainder of this window," Courell said during a delayed news conference. "They also have the intention to wear black armbands in recognition of all lives lost in the [Gaza] conflict."
Pre-Match Developments
On Saturday, there was uncertainty about whether the match would take place. A scheduled pre-match news conference was postponed shortly before it was set to begin, as players were engaged in discussions regarding the situation. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu announced his withdrawal from the game, prompting further discussions among the squad.
