Airbnb has introduced its new AI-powered search feature this week as part of its fall update, marking a significant advancement for a company that has approached AI cautiously. Brian Chesky, co-founder and CEO of Airbnb, has previously stated that a chatbot-only interface is inadequate for travel discovery.

AI Integration at Airbnb

In a recent Zoom interview, Chesky elaborated on the company's strategy regarding AI, the evolution of interfaces, and the challenges of consumer AI. He remains skeptical about chatbots, asserting that they are not suitable for browsing or shopping due to their limited options and the need for multiple interactions to reach a conclusion.

“

"I think that I’ve believed for a long time that a chatbot isn’t the right interface for e-commerce... I think that there’s going to be some interface that is... something between a chatbot and what you see in the first version we shipped," Chesky stated.

Chesky emphasized that many users prefer a more engaging experience when planning travel, as studies indicate that people derive more pleasure from the anticipation of travel than from the travel itself. He noted that the current version of Airbnb's search is not the final iteration, and the interface will continue to evolve.

The Need for Collaborative Interfaces

Another issue with chatbots, according to Chesky, is their design for individual use, which does not cater to the collaborative nature of travel planning often involving family and friends. Over the next three to six months, Airbnb aims to explore interfaces that support "multiplayer" AI, allowing groups to plan trips together.

As the landscape of AI tools evolves, new interface designs are emerging in various applications. Startups like Monogram and Wabi are experimenting with generative interfaces, which adapt in real-time rather than relying on pre-designed screens. Chesky anticipates a blend of deterministic and generative interfaces in the future.
