A prestigious scientific photography competition has disqualified its winning entry after concerns were raised regarding its authenticity. Nikon announced that the winning video, submitted by Dr. Ning Xu from Tsinghua University in China, was found to be in violation of the rules of its Small World In Motion contest due to the use of generative AI in its composition.

Contest Rules Violation

The company stated that the video "did not comply with the competition rules regarding generative AI." However, Nikon clarified that this decision was not a reflection on the entrant's professional reputation or scientific contributions. The contest, which has been running for 15 years, is specifically designed for microscopic images and videos.

Nikon's decision came after a thorough re-evaluation of the video and supporting materials, along with consultations with members of its judging panel.
