Prosecutors in the Justice Department’s civil rights division are seeking criminal charges against Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top aide to Donald Trump, who provided significant testimony regarding the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. According to a source familiar with the matter, the potential charges involve allegations of lying to Congress.

Key Testimony

Hutchinson, who served as an aide to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, testified that the deputy chief of staff for operations informed her that Trump did not want to return to the White House on January 6. She claimed that at one point, Trump lunged for the wheel of his SUV in an attempt to join his supporters at the Capitol.

Republicans have consistently disputed this account.

Investigation Details

The Department of Justice's efforts to indict Hutchinson were first reported by Punchbowl News on Thursday. A spokesperson for the department stated, "The department does not confirm or deny the existence of investigations, or the lack thereof."
