Uber and Pony.ai, a Chinese autonomous vehicle maker, are set to launch a robotaxi service in London as part of their expanded partnership aimed at introducing driverless cars to Europe. The two companies announced on Thursday that they would begin testing Pony.ai’s Gen-7 robotaxis in London in the coming weeks.

Context

This announcement marks another step in Uber’s ambitious push into autonomous vehicle technology, bolstered by a growing network of partnerships and investments. Over the past few years, Uber has formed alliances with more than 30 autonomous vehicle companies, including Pony.ai, as it aims to capture a share of the autonomous delivery and ride-hailing markets.

Uber anticipates offering autonomous vehicle trips in up to 15 cities worldwide by the end of 2026, with a roughly equal distribution between U.S. and international markets.

Developments

Uber and Pony.ai first joined forces in May 2025, initially focusing on the Middle East. Their collaboration has since expanded to Europe, where they plan to deploy 2,000 robotaxis, starting with Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. In August 2026, the companies launched an autonomous ride-hailing service in Zagreb in partnership with Verne, a startup founded by Mate Rimac, who is also the CEO of Rimac Group.
