Introduction

The word Swarajya literally means "self-rule" or "one's own kingdom." It became the foundational idea behind the kingdom Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj built in the seventeenth-century Deccan, a region otherwise dominated by the Mughal Empire and the Deccan Sultanates.

The Core Idea

Swarajya was not simply territorial ambition. It represented the idea that the local population of the Deccan, particularly the Marathi-speaking people, deserved a government drawn from among themselves rather than serving as subjects or soldiers for distant Sultans and Emperors.

This vision combined:

  • Independent political authority
  • Locally rooted administration
  • Protection of forts, villages, and trade routes
  • Religious and cultural autonomy

Origins of the Idea

The seeds of Swarajya were planted before Shivaji Maharaj's birth, through the experiences of Maratha commanders like Shahaji Bhosale, who served larger kingdoms but retained personal jagirs (territories) with considerable autonomy.
