Introduction

The Deccan region has a long history of powerful ruling dynasties stretching back over two thousand years before the rise of the Maratha Empire. Understanding these earlier kingdoms provides important context for the political traditions the Marathas would later inherit.

The Satavahanas

One of the earliest major powers in the Deccan, the Satavahana dynasty ruled from around the 2nd century BCE to the 3rd century CE. They are credited with fostering trade, Prakrit literature, and early urban development in the region.

The Chalukyas

The Chalukya dynasty, ruling in various branches from the 6th to 12th centuries CE, controlled large parts of the Deccan and southern India. They are noted for significant achievements in temple architecture, particularly at sites such as Badami and Pattadakal.
