Iran is currently awaiting an official response from the United States regarding its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Reports indicate that Donald Trump has rejected the deal, which was presented during the UN General Assembly in New York.
Proposal Details
The Iranian government communicated its diplomatic initiative through Qatari mediators, suggesting that the reopening of the strategic waterway could conclude hostilities in the region within seven days. However, Trump has expressed skepticism, reportedly informing his staff that he anticipates a renewed bombing campaign following the November midterm elections.
A US official previously described discussions with Iran via mediators as "positive and constructive." Iran's proposal includes:
- Lifting the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.
- Waiving sanctions on Iranian oil sales.
- Observing a ceasefire that would encompass Lebanon.
Iranian Foreign Minister's Statement
Abbas Araghchi, Iran's foreign minister, elaborated on the proposal outside the UN Security Council, stating that the seven-day timeline would commence once the US accepts the plan. He mentioned that initial steps would take approximately four to five days, with the strait expected to be open by the sixth day.
“"And on day seven, the talks with the US will be started for the final deal on mutually agreed subjects," Araghchi noted, referring to the nuclear programme.
