Thousands of residents in the northeastern United States are facing power outages as a powerful storm, known as a nor’easter, approaches. On Saturday, more than 70,000 customers were reported without electricity, signaling the storm's potential to create dangerous conditions throughout the weekend.
Storm Impact and Warnings
Forecasters have issued warnings of gale-force winds that could down trees and heavy rainfall that may lead to significant flooding. Tens of millions of people are currently in the storm's path, which is already unleashing strong winds and rain across the region.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has indicated that dangerous flooding is expected along the mid-Atlantic coast, particularly in New Jersey and Delaware. In Surf City, New Jersey, streets were flooded, with water rippling along the surface and inundating some homes.
Local Responses
In Manasquan, about 34 miles (55 km) up the coast, Mayor Mike Mangan expressed concerns about prolonged flooding, stating, "I expect a lot of water in the streets for a long time." A voluntary evacuation has been issued for some low-lying areas in the community.
Concerts have been canceled, and dozens of flights into airports in Boston, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard were canceled on Friday and Saturday. Several airlines are waiving change or cancellation fees for east coast flights through the weekend.
