UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed his commitment to delivering radical change for the country despite facing significant economic challenges. In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, he stated, "There’s always things you can do, it’s just whether you’re prepared to do them."

Fiscal Stability as a Priority

Burnham acknowledged that the public finances are currently "challenging" ahead of next month’s budget. He emphasized that achieving fiscal stability is crucial, as it would enable the government to address larger issues. The UK economy is under intense inflationary pressure due to a series of global economic shocks, including the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has increased borrowing costs and limited the government's options.

Reassuring Voters and Markets

As he prepares for his first Labour conference as Prime Minister, Burnham aims to reassure voters of his willingness to make tough decisions while also demonstrating to the markets that he can ensure fiscal stability. He remarked, "The public would have more respect for us if we go and grab something difficult … and say, ‘Right, we’re going to do something here’, rather than constantly playing the political game before fixing the problems."

Stability and Transformation

Burnham stressed the importance of stability, stating, "I do think it is crucial to have stability and to show that there’s a willingness to face up to the reality of some of these difficult things." He believes that from this stability, the government can pursue more radical transformations that would ultimately strengthen the country’s public finances.
