Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized US President Donald Trump on Wednesday for a diesel supply deal with Russia, stating that Washington had chosen "the wrong side" by agreeing to import Russian fuel. Zelenskyy appealed to Trump to support Kyiv in its ongoing war against Moscow.
“"It's painful when President Trump chooses one side, not our side," Zelenskyy said during an interview on the British show Piers Morgan Uncensored, as reported by the New York Post. "But we are okay that he's in the middle. But if you're in the middle, you have to stay in the middle. Not on the wrong side."
Concerns Over US Support
Zelenskyy expressed concern over the advice Trump was receiving regarding the deal, stating, "I think his advisers are wrong. I don't know who is pushing him. Not to the right side; this is not the right side of history." He emphasized that the deal indicated Ukraine was losing the support of a key ally, lamenting, "It is a pity that we are losing a strong partner."
The Ukrainian President's remarks followed Trump's announcement of a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin for Russia to supply over 300,000 metric tonnes of diesel to the United States and global markets. Trump defended the arrangement, claiming it was intended to benefit the global market rather than the US, arguing that it would help alleviate high energy prices.
Energy Ceasefire Proposal
In the same interview, Zelenskyy mentioned that Ukraine had supported an energy ceasefire as a step towards de-escalation, stressing the need to protect its population and infrastructure during the war.
