At least 600,000 people across Ukraine are now without electricity following deadly overnight Russian missile and drone strikes, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. He reported that "critical" energy infrastructure was hit in Kyiv and the capital region, as well as in the north-eastern city of Kharkiv.

Context

Despite a claim by US President Donald Trump on Sunday that an "energy ceasefire" was in place between Russia and Ukraine, the strikes have caused significant damage. In Kyiv, at least three people were killed and 21 injured, as reported by Ukraine's state emergencies service, DSNS.

Developments

Russia's defence ministry stated that its "massive" strikes targeted communications and energy facilities in the Kyiv and Kharkiv regions used by Ukraine's military. They also claimed to have shot down 902 Ukrainian drones overnight over various Russian regions, including Moscow and Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
