Stratford International train station in east London is set to receive funding in next week’s budget, positioning it to fulfill its potential as a hub for cross-Channel services. Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, has been advocating for this upgrade to enable the station to commence international rail services.

Current Situation

Until now, only domestic routes to and from central London and Kent have stopped at Stratford International, although Eurostar services pass through on their way to and from St Pancras. Khan stated:

“

"We’ve been working closely with the government to make Stratford International truly ‘international’ for the first time – opening up new opportunities for jobs, investment and tourism, while connecting one of the UK’s fastest-growing economic centres directly to Europe."

He emphasized the need to unlock the station's full potential, contributing to Stratford’s ongoing success story.

Upgrade Plans

The proposed upgrade would involve significant enhancements to the station, which currently has only two platforms. Key improvements would include:

  • Adding a border post and security checks
  • Establishing a check-in zone and waiting area
  • Enhancing passenger facilities
