Myanmar has recently shared rare photographs of Aung San Suu Kyi, the ousted leader currently under house arrest, after she received gifts from King Charles. Critics argue that this move is a tactic by the military to alleviate the country's diplomatic isolation.

Gift from King Charles

A spokesperson from the presidential office announced on social media that officials from the home ministry delivered two gardening books on soil, along with a sealed envelope and a diplomatic pouch from King Charles, who is known for his interest in environmental issues. The images released show Suu Kyi smiling in a wood-paneled room, with a calendar visible on the wall behind her.

At 81 years old, Suu Kyi, the daughter of the assassinated national hero Gen Aung San, has spent much of her life under house arrest due to her leadership in pro-democracy movements. Currently, she is serving multiple sentences at an undisclosed location in Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar.

Context of Her Detention

Despite winning the 2015 election, Suu Kyi was deposed in a military coup in 2021, which has since led to a civil war resulting in over 100,000 deaths, according to the independent conflict monitor ACLED. Her health and whereabouts have been largely unknown until a visit from the International Committee of the Red Cross in August.

Min Aung Hlaing, the coup leader and former junta chief, was installed as civilian president in April following elections widely criticized as fraudulent. He has been attempting to restore diplomatic relations regionally and internationally.
