Russia has unilaterally released Stephen Hubbard, an American who had been imprisoned for over four years, following a request from the United States. This development occurred on Wednesday in St Petersburg, where Vladimir Putin met with Steve Witkoff, an envoy from Donald Trump, to discuss ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Background
Hubbard, a 74-year-old former teacher, was charged with fighting as a mercenary for Ukraine. His release marks a strategic move by Moscow, potentially aligning Trump more closely with Putin's stance on Ukraine and providing a diplomatic win for the U.S. president ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
Details of the Release
Unlike previous instances where American prisoners were exchanged, Hubbard's release was unilateral. Following the announcement, Trump stated on Truth Social that the U.S. was not required to offer anything in return, calling it an "unprecedented situation for Russia." He emphasized:
“"There was no ‘swap’ necessary for this release."
Witkoff's Meeting with Putin
During the meeting at the grand Constantine Palace, Witkoff praised Putin, referring to him as a humanitarian:
“"You talk so much about my president, President Trump, being a humanitarian. You are a humanitarian also, sir, and I salute that."
Witkoff also expressed gratitude for a controversial agreement that allows Russian diesel exports to the U.S. This praise contrasts sharply with the increasingly hostile rhetoric directed at Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine's president, by senior U.S. officials, including Trump, who has called for Zelenskyy’s resignation.
