Police have apprehended Brendan Nugent, a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee, in connection with an alleged attack on Helen Haines, an MP in Victoria. Nugent was arrested at the scene in Wangaratta.
Background on Brendan Nugent
Nugent is known as a long-term forestry campaigner in the northeast of Victoria. His arrest has come as a shock to many, including environment campaigners who previously collaborated with him. Nugent holds a master's degree in forest ecosystems science from The University of Melbourne and has dedicated years to researching the forestry industry in the region.
He has also been a registered business owner in Wangaratta and served as a committee member for the Save our Strathbogie Forest Group, which opposes logging in the area. However, he became inactive in the group around 2019-20.
