Designer Stella McCartney showcased her latest collection at Paris Fashion Week, emphasizing a theme of ‘sea life, not sea food’ while promoting alternatives to wool. This season, she proudly declared, "There is no wool on the runway this season, and I’m proud of that."
Focus on Animal Rights
For 30 years, McCartney has been a vocal advocate for animal rights in the fashion industry. Recently, the topic has gained renewed attention following an incident involving a Peta protester at a catwalk show, which highlighted the cruelty often associated with wool production. McCartney stated, "The way a lot of [wool production] is done today is deeply cruel."
Innovations in Fabric
McCartney has been developing wool alternatives, including Brewed Protein, a fermented substitute for cashmere and wool created in collaboration with the Japanese biotech firm Spiber. She explained her approach to wool sourcing:
“"If I use wool, I can show you exactly where it’s coming from, and I’m proud of that. But I’m alone in that, and I shouldn’t be."
