Consumer advocacy group Choice has conducted a taste test of 29 store-bought mayonnaises, revealing that the cheapest option is also the best. Aldi’s Colway Real Mayonnaise and Woolworths Whole Egg Mayonnaise both scored 80%, making them the top contenders in the test.

Aldi’s Colway Real Mayonnaise:
- Price: $2.79 (61c per 100g)
- Judges praised its “mild” and “pleasant” aroma, along with its “creamy, smooth texture” and balanced flavors of citrus, sweetness, mustard, and whole egg.

Woolworths Whole Egg Mayonnaise:
- Price: $2.80 (64c per 100g)
- Noted for its “good shape retention” and “balanced flavor” with pleasant vinegar acidity, sweetness, oil, and mustard.
Silver Medalist
- Aldi’s Colway Authentic Mayonnaise:
- Score: 77%
- Price: 78c per 100g
- Judges commented on its “homogeneous texture” and balanced flavor, although one judge noted its slightly orange appearance, likening it to having “been under the sunlamps.”
The Worst Ranked
The lowest score went to Coles 97% Fat Free Mayonnaise, which received a score of 47%. Judges criticized its “translucent, pale appearance” and “thick, gummy, glue-like consistency.” Judge Brigid Treloar remarked, “It was so sweet,” highlighting its sugar content of 18.9g per 100g, which is at least double that of most other products tested.
