California has officially banned child marriage, with Governor Gavin Newsom signing legislation to end the practice that remains legal in 32 US states. The new law, effective January 1, 2027, mandates that individuals must be 18 years old to marry in the Golden State.
Legislative Background
Governor Newsom described the ban as a "long overdue measure to protect young Californians and minors." He signed the bill into law alongside Courtney Stodden, who was married at just 16 to a 50-year-old Hollywood actor. Stodden, an advocate against child marriage, called the change a "victory" and emphasized that survivors of child marriage should "never have been expected to carry this burden."
Survivor Perspectives
Stodden expressed her commitment to continue fighting until children are protected from marriage in all 50 states. She was married to actor Doug Hutchison in 2011, a union that drew international attention and controversy. Other survivors, like Brittany Bee, also praised the new law. Bee, who was married at 17 to escape an abusive home, stated:
“"California has sent a clear message to the world today. A message of hope for all children that they may be free from systemic violence. That they may choose their own path."
