The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the risk of a plague epidemic in Russia is low following the sudden death of Darya Shipilova, a lab technician at a plague research institute in Siberia. Shipilova, aged 28, passed away last week, just two days after falling ill.

Incident Overview

Reports from Russian media suggest that Shipilova may have contracted the infection due to an accident at her workplace, where dangerous pathogens are studied. Russian authorities have minimized the incident, attributing her death to "pneumonia of an unknown aetiology."

In response to the situation, strict quarantine measures have been implemented at the research center in Irkutsk and in several neighboring hospitals.

WHO Assessment

Christian Lindmeier, a spokesperson for the WHO, confirmed on Tuesday that there are no signs of a wider outbreak. He stated:

“

"All of the patients’ contacts have reportedly been identified and are being monitored for illness, and none to date have shown symptoms of illness."
