The UK government has approved the Jackdaw gasfield, located 150 miles east of Aberdeen, to begin production in time for winter. This decision addresses the critical question posed by Prime Minister Andy Burnham regarding the source of the UK's oil and gas as the nation moves towards net zero emissions.

Context

In 2025, oil and gas accounted for 75% of the UK's energy, according to government data. Despite the growth of domestic renewables, 43% of the UK's overall energy was imported last year. Current pathways to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 necessitate continued use of oil and gas, as the transition to electrification is still in its early stages. For instance, fewer than 2% of UK households have installed heat pumps, and nearly 95% of vehicles on the road still rely on petrol and diesel.

The global energy market has also become increasingly unreliable, with potential disruptions from geopolitical tensions. The Langeled pipeline, which supplies 40% of the UK's gas consumption, poses a significant security vulnerability.
