Storm expected to make landfall on US’s northern Gulf coast with risk of flash floods and isolated river flooding.
Isaias has become the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season, with wind speeds of 80 mph and a minimum pressure of 975 mb. It is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane as it approaches the US’s northern Gulf coast on Friday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Context
Due to the strong El Niño, this season has been notably quiet for Atlantic hurricanes. The first hurricane of the season has not formed this late since October 8, 1905, which predates the satellite era of hurricane tracking that began in the 1960s.
Developments
Isaias is expected to make landfall on Friday evening local time, bringing an estimated 75-150 mm (2.9-5.9 in) of rainfall across the Gulf coast. There may be up to 250 mm in some areas, raising the risk of flash flooding and isolated river flooding.
