Helen Haines, the Australian MP who was struck by a car in what authorities describe as a deliberate attack, has lost both of her legs, as confirmed by her husband, Phil Haines. He described the incident as "horrendous" but noted that "her heart and her mind are in good shape". Phil added, "the good news in all this is that she's alive."
Incident Details
The alleged attacker, Brendan Nugent, 43, faces multiple charges and made his first court appearance on Wednesday. Nugent was arrested shortly after he allegedly drove his Toyota LandCruiser into Haines outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, approximately 240 km (150 miles) northeast of Melbourne.
Phil Haines stated, "Her road to recovery will be long and difficult, but we know she is a fighter. She is a determined person who will do her best, with our support and love, to recover. And that is what we hope for." He expressed gratitude towards hospital staff and the public for their support, urging those who wish to help to donate to the Save the Children fund.
Legal Proceedings
Earlier on Wednesday, Nugent appeared in court facing three charges: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Police indicated that more charges, including attempted murder, may be forthcoming. Nugent, a local from Tarrawingee and known as an environmental campaigner, remained silent during his brief court appearance and did not apply for bail. He is scheduled to return to court in February.
Court documents reveal that Nugent has been charged with cultivating and possessing cannabis. His lawyer mentioned that he has "mental health concerns" but did not provide further details. Additionally, it was disclosed that Nugent suffers from a rare neurological condition known as idiopathic transverse myelitis, caused by inflammation of the spinal cord.
