All 10 Victoria Crosses (VCs) awarded to members of the Royal Marines are going on display together for the first time at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. This new permanent exhibition, part of a £15 million investment, showcases tales of courage from significant conflicts, including the Crimean War and both World Wars.

A Unique Display

Matthew Sheldon, the chief executive officer of Royal Navy Museums, described the display as "fantastically special." He noted that the Royal Marines have only ever been awarded 10 Victoria Crosses, and this is the first time they have been displayed together. Previously, these medals were kept in secure storage, unseen by the public.

Reflecting on History

The exhibition, titled the Royal Marines Experience, aims to tell 360 years of marine history. Sheldon emphasized that the marines who received VCs were often younger and not from senior ranks, similar to modern marines who operate in small, agile teams. He believes the stories behind these medals could spark discussions about the UK's role in global conflicts today.
