A buyer at a Texas estate sale made a startling discovery when he found several World War II-era grenades in a box of newly purchased items. This prompted a neighborhood lockdown and a visit from the Austin Police Department’s bomb squad.

Discovery and Response

The grenades, described as "live and active" in a social media post by the Austin Police Association, were carefully removed and disarmed. Due to their age and apparent volatility, the situation required delicate handling by bomb squad members, whose "training, expertise, and steady nerves" are rarely seen by the public.

“

"Handling 80-year-old explosives with unknown stability is dangerous, precise work, and they do it with the professionalism this city counts on," the post stated.

The police expressed gratitude to their patrol officers, who quickly secured the scene, set up a perimeter, and ensured the safety of neighbors while waiting for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
