Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexual offences against two women who were children at the time of the abuse. The sentencing took place at Newry Crown Court on Thursday, marking a significant fall from grace for the 63-year-old politician, who was once a prominent figure in Northern Ireland's unionist politics.
Details of the Sentencing
Donaldson was found guilty in June of 18 counts of sexual abuse, including one count of rape, committed between 1985 and 2008. The judge, Paul Ramsey, sentenced him to 11 years for the rape of complainant B and four years for offences against complainant A, to be served consecutively. He will also remain on the sex offender register indefinitely.
““There has not been, and doubtless will not be, one word of regret, apology or shame from this man to at least provide his victims with some crumb of comfort,” Judge Ramsey stated.
Victims' Courage Recognized
The judge commended the victims for their bravery in coming forward. “It is only through the courage, resourcefulness and determination of two young women that you’ve been brought to justice in respect of the crimes you committed against them when they were children,” he said.
Catherine Kierans, head of the Public Prosecution Service’s serious crime unit, praised the victims for seeking justice, emphasizing that Donaldson's public persona masked the reality of his actions. “This case shows that sexual abuse can be hidden behind a facade of respectability,” she remarked.
