The Liberal National Party (LNP) of Queensland has announced plans for sweeping changes to workplace laws, a move that could jeopardize its suburban support critical to maintaining its lead in the polls. For nearly two years, the LNP has avoided contentious issues to preserve political capital, but this shift marks a significant departure from that strategy.
Proposed Changes
The proposed legislation would empower Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie to break strikes by public sector workers under certain conditions, particularly if deemed "in the public interest." Additionally, the government aims to make it more challenging for public servants, including emergency services workers, to claim compensation for psychological injuries. Under the new laws, workers would need to prove that their workplace was the primary cause of their psychological issues to receive support.
Reactions to the Proposal
Law firm Slater and Gordon has criticized the changes, stating they would hinder Queenslanders' access to support for psychological injuries. The United Workers Union, representing paramedics and healthcare workers, described the changes as "an underhanded attack on Queensland ambulance officers and other hospital staff."
