A musical based on Amy Winehouse is currently in development for London’s West End. The project is in its early stages, with Catherine Schreiber, a Tony award-winning producer known for her work on Cabaret and Rent, attached to the project, according to Variety. Casting is reportedly underway.
Involvement of Mitch Winehouse
Mitch Winehouse, the late musician’s father, is also involved in the show, suggesting that it will feature her most beloved songs. The Guardian has reached out to Amy Winehouse’s record label for comment.
This week marks the 20th anniversary of her landmark album Back to Black, celebrated with a tribute concert at London’s Roundhouse. The event featured performances by Jorja Smith, Mark Ronson, Lianne La Havas, and Corinne Bailey Rae. Dorian Lynskey of the Guardian remarked, “Back to Black remains a miraculous set of modern love songs in vintage clothing,” while also noting that “re-enactments can be limiting.”
Upcoming Releases
On 23 October, an expanded reissue of Back to Black will be released, which includes four unreleased demos, B-sides, and a live album recording from Amsterdam’s Paradiso in 2007.
